Our Mission
We believe a country is measured by how it treats the creatures with no voice of their own.
C.A.P.U., the Civilian Animal Protection Unit, was founded in Windhoek in 2012 as a volunteer-run non-profit with a simple purpose: to rescue animals from abuse, to find them foster or permanent homes, and through campaigns to make the public aware of animal abuse, dog fighting and backyard breeding. When a call comes in, whoever is available answers it.

Every rescue needs somewhere to land. We place animals in caring foster homes and match them with permanent families.
Veterinary care
Our rescues are treated and patched up through our partner, Windhoek Veterinary Clinic, funded by the donations you give.
Awareness campaigns
We campaign to make the public aware of animal abuse, dog fighting and backyard breeding, and how to report it.

From a chain to a couch of his own. Twice over.
Bista spent three long years chained up and confined to an old tyre before CAPU got him out. The neglect never broke his spirit. With months of care and training alongside Gavin Damon, he bloomed into the joyful, affectionate boy he was always meant to be, and found a home. Then that home fell through, and Bista was back with us, waiting all over again.
Not for long. Bista has been rehomed with Steven Smit, and Gavin himself drove him to his new front door. The professional chiller finally has a couch, a lap and a person of his very own. We are so happy and so blessed. Thank you to everyone who shared his story until the right one found it.

A mixed-breed litter in our care, raised in a tyre-bed nursery with mum and dad right there. They don't have names yet — that part is up to you.

Clothes, books, toys, household bits. We sell them at the CAPU shop and every cent goes straight to the vet bills.

CAPU is a registered Voluntary Association run entirely by volunteers. Funds are managed per rescue, and we give feedback to every donor on the animals their gift helped, because trust is everything.
